Time-based media artist Hadeer Omar has created a contemporary response to the Al Koot Fort, which holds a unique and complex history since its construction in 1906. The artist draws upon the area surrounding the fort and uses Souq Waqif and the Msheireb district as sources of inspiration, weaving together traditional and contemporary aspects of daily life, translating and transforming them into surreal immersive environments.

Join artist Shaima Al-Tamimi - a Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Project Award recipient - and Tasweer’s Senior Curator Maryam Hassan Al-Thani in conversation about Shaima's approach to photographing cultural issues through personal storytelling. Focused on her project ‘Don't get too comfortable’ - a photo narrative video letter that she currently producing - they will also discuss the progress of Shaima's work since her first long-term project ‘As if we never came’, where she delved into her ancestral journey, and her current project that is evolving into a multi-sensory and multi-platform experience.
ABOUT SHAIMA AL-TAMIMI:
Shaima Al-Tamimi is a Yemeni-Kenyan visual storyteller based in the GCC. Her work is inspired by social and cultural issues reflective of her own personal story. She explores themes relating to patterns and impacts of migration, identity, and culinary culture. Through the mediums of photography, film, and writing - and via a deeply rooted documentary approach - Shaima merges historical and family archives with present-day portraits and visuals to create vivid narratives, offering a unique perspective on the life stories of her subjects. She is currently a PSJ 2020 Fellow at the Magnum Foundation. Her project ‘As if we never came’ was supported by the Arab Documentary Photography program via AFAC and the Prince Claus Fund.
